Joel Maturi served as Gophers Athletics Director from 2002 until his retirement in 2012. During his tenure, he oversaw the merger of the formerly separate men’s and women’s athletics departments and the construction of TCF Bank Stadium. He was recognized for his passionate support of all of the U’s teams and its student-athletes. This week, Maturi reflects on his long career in high school and collegiate athletics. We’ll also hear how he was the inspiration for a recurring character on NBC’s Saturday Night Live show.

It’s another gem from the Gopher Sports Update archives. Former GSU host Ron Miller interviewed Gophers and Lakers basketball legend Myer “Whitey” Skoog in 2011. Skoog played for the Gophers from 1948-1951. He was a first round NBA draft pick for the Minneapolis Lakers in 1951 and played for six seasons until a back injury forced his retirement.
