Today, college sports venues bear the names of corporate sponsors, and broadcast rights fees are important sources of revenue for athletics departments. This week, a behind-the-scenes look at the pride of Minnesota–the Golden Gophers Marching Band. It’s one of several athletics bands at the U but by far the most visible. Assistant Director of Bands/Director of Marching and Athletics Bands Elizabeth (Betsy) Kerns McCann tells us about the process of auditioning for the Marching Band and the role it and the other athletics bands play in promoting Gophers Athletics.

Fresh off leading the Lynx to their fourth WNBA championship, former Gophers Women’s Basketball standout Lindsay Whelan reflects on her days at the U and the excitement of returning to The Barn to close out this season. Also, Gophers Associate Athletic Director Scott Ellison gives a preview of the new Athletes Village currently under construction.
Homecoming week officially kicks off on October 14 with the Day of Service where alumni and students take on community-based projects for charitable and other non-profit organizations. The week’s festivities culminate with the Homecoming game on October 21 at 2:30 pm when the Gophers face Illinois. This week on Gopher Sports Update, a look at the history and significance of Homecoming with University of Minnesota Alumni Association President/CEO Lisa Lewis.
