Sep 21 Gophers Athletics Honors the Late Kathleen Ridder

This weekend, the Golden Gophers honor a local philanthropist who was also a pioneering feminist and a tireless advocate for women’s athletics. The late Kathleen Ridder and her late husband, Robert, led and principally funded the effort to build Ridder Arena, the first collegiate arena in the nation dedicated to women’s hockey. This Sunday is Kathleen Ridder day at the U of M, and her many contributions to Gophers women’s athletics will be celebrated during hockey, volleyball and soccer events that day. On this week’s GSU, a conversation with former Gophers Women’s Hockey Head Coach Laura Halldorson about the legacy of Kathleen Ridder.

Aug 25 University Sports Pavilion Re-Named in Honor of Former Gophers AD Joel Maturi

Joel Maturi served as Gophers Athletics Director from 2002 until his retirement in 2012. During his tenure, he oversaw the merger of the formerly separate men’s and women’s athletics departments and the construction of TCF Bank Stadium. He was recognized for his passionate support of all of the U’s teams and its student-athletes. This week, Maturi reflects on his long career in high school and collegiate athletics. We’ll also hear how he was the inspiration for a recurring character on NBC’s Saturday Night Live show.

Aug 3 The Best of GSU: Minnesota Basketball Legend Myer “Whitey” Skoog

It’s another gem from the Gopher Sports Update archives. Former GSU host Ron Miller interviewed Gophers and Lakers basketball legend Myer “Whitey” Skoog in 2011. Skoog played for the Gophers from 1948-1951. He was a first round NBA draft pick for the Minneapolis Lakers in 1951 and played for six seasons until a back injury forced his retirement. The Lakers won three NBA Championships during Skoog’s first three years on the team. Take a look back into Minnesota basketball history with the man who invented the jump shot.

Over the past 30 years, collegiate athletics have adopted many of the marketing and sponsorship strategies employed by professional sports. Today, college sports venues bear the names of corporate sponsors, and broadcast rights fees are important sources of revenue for athletics departments. Jul 19 Gophers Volleyball’s Dalianliz Rosado On Big Ten Foreign Tour & The Minnesota Blades Prepare the Next Generation of College Hockey Players

Gophers volleyball senior Dalianliz Rosado was on the Big Ten Foreign Tour in June.  We’ll hear about her travels and competition and the challenges of leaving her home in Puerto Rico to play for Minnesota.  Also, a look at a youth hockey association that prepares its athletes for collegiate-level play.  Minnesota Blades board member (and U of M Law School alum) Terry Moore talks about the organization’s player development process.
